Recently there have been many articles popping up in media sources advocating a return to traditional diets in order to sport a healthy, lean
flat-bellied body. Fad diets are no longer fashionable and neither is obesity. Over the last decade we have been discovering something our
forefathers knew abundantly – our foods contain extraordinary health properties including the ability to prevent obesity and maintain a lean
body. These studies have identified certain foods with amazing weight loss properties that have challenged our previous ideas about what
type of diet produces lasting and consistent weight loss results. Generally in the west we have promoted a diet that contains
approximately 50 – 55% carbohydrates, 15 – 20% fats and 30 – 35% protein. Yet even when these guidelines are taught in schools and
widely known by most western countries, we are facing an epidemic obesity crisis. We are beginning to understand that this is largely to do
with our modern lifestyle and how it has impacted on our dietary choices. Looking at traditional diets in Europe shows that the results of
the new science may in fact explain certain paradoxes regarding diets that do not follow the western healthy profile yet lead to lower mortality,
lower chronic lifestyle diseases and lower obesity rates
1. One of these apparent contradictions is the French Paradox where the
French apparently have a high intake of fats and wine yet are generally slim and outlive other nationalities. Another paradox is the Inuit
Eskimos from Iceland whose diet consists of up to 50% fat and high percentages of animal products with minimal fruit and vegetables yet
they are healthy, slim and have significantly reduced cardiovascular disease when compared to populations with other national diets.
Generally, travel to Europe has been viewed as disastrous for our silhouettes with restaurant dining doing little for our flat belly quest –
until now. We have looked at the cutting edge in nutrition and weight loss research and identified 9 different meals you can eat whilst
travelling in Europe that not only maintains your weight but will prohibit fat formation. This delicious diet not only tastes wonderful but naturally
slims down your belly. Most of the Mediterranean meals are of ancient origin and traditional to the region they originated
